Trypanosomatids 24EC - 32 EC

Nine cultures (24EC - 32EC) were isolated from a species of pyrrhocorids collected along the Barva transect trail (left) at the El Ceibo site. Nymphs formed large aggregations (right) under fallen leaves and on tree trunks.

Prevalence of infection in that population was 64%. No infection was found in the same host species collected 1 km away from the first population.

          Promastigote       Epimastigote
Isolate 24EC, phase contrast (left). After staining by Giemsa (above), the kinetoplast appears as an intense dot, localized either anterior to the nucleus (a typical promastigote), or by its side (an epimastigote-like type).

Isolate 25EC, phase contrast (left) and Giemsa (right). All cells appear promastigotes.

Isolate 26EC (phase contrast). An elongated promastigote.

Isolate 27EC, cell morphology is intermediate between pro- and choanomastigotes

Isolate 28EC, cells with a distinctly abrupt anterior end, intermediate between pro- and choanomastigotes.

Isolate 29EC

Isolate 30EC, promastigotes with a lateral position of the kinetoplast

Isolate 31EC

Isolate 32EC, most cells are choanomastigotes, some are promastigotes
